  General Notes:

The man with the brains. Went to SA in 1892 and family followed in 1896 and May 1899. Worked on the railways where he died in an accident at work in July 1906 (???).

  Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: Surveyor.

• Residence: Netherlands, 1845.

• Occupation: Opzichter, 16 Dec 1875. ¹

• Occupation: Landbouwer, 5 Nov 1877. ³

• Emigration: to South Africa, 1892. ² He emigrated without his family but they came later. The reason for his departure was he feared war in Europe. They were sent back to the Netherlands circa 1900, possibly by the British.

Jan married Harmijntje Steen, daughter of Gerrit Steen and Harmijntje Bergen, on 16 Dec 1875 in Velsen, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.¹ (Harmijntje Steen was born circa 1849 in Velsen, Noord-Holland, Netherlands ^{1 4} and died on 21 Jan 1878 in Beekbergen, Apeldoorn, Gelderland, Netherlands ⁴.)

Jan next married Maria Weijenberg, daughter of Hendrikus Weijenberg and Abramina van Welsen, on 2 Oct 1879 in Tiel, Gelderland, Netherlands.² (Maria Weijenberg was born on 15 Jul 1854 and died in 1919.)
