Margaret Mary Funge

  • Marriage: George Alexander on 19 Jan 1786 1 2 3

bullet  General Notes:

There is some doubt about whether this lady was Margaret or Mary. The Witwatersrand marriage register gives her as Margaret but a film of the St Helena marriage records appears to show a corrected entry stuck over the original which names her as Mary. The baptisms of their children show her as Margaret, so this will be the name by which she was known. A search through the records has failed to find her, but a Francis Funge, who died in April 1752, fathered 5 boys and 5 girls, one of which was a Mary born 29 November 1738. There is no record of any of the boys having married, but all 5 girls did so, including Mary. This means that Margaret was either the daughter of one of the boys, or more likely considering the age, the illegitimate daughter of one of the girls before she married.

Margaret married George Alexander, son of George Alexander and Margaret Bagley, on 19 Jan 1786.1 2 3 (George Alexander was born before 1 Mar 1758 3, christened on 1 Mar 1758 3 and died on 25 Oct 1800 2 3 4.)
